What happens at a hackathon?

A hackathon is an “invention marathon” in which teams collaborate to turn crazy ideas into real projects within a tight time limit. At our hackathon, teams of 2-4 collaborate over 36 hours to challenge the status quo, fulfill prize challenges, and create meaningful impact. We provide software, mentors, fun activities, speakers, workshops, buckets of coffee and so much more. You take care of hacking; we’ll take care of you.

What makes START Hack unique?

START Hack is Europe’s most entrepreneurial hackathon. What differentiates START Hack from other hackathons is our emphasis on fostering entrepreneurial spirit within our participants. We strive to spark thinking and creating beyond just this one weekend. This is why we encourage students with both business or tech backgrounds to apply!

When is START Hack?

START Hack 2022 will take place from the 23rd to the 25th of March 2022! Yes, it will take place during the week and not on a weekend. Why? Well stay tuned for some (very) exciting news ;)

Do I need to know how to code?

Nope! START Hack is open to anyone interested in technology and building awesome things, which requires more than just being able to code. We encourage students and young professionals of all backgrounds to apply!

We will have many workshops and resources for participants of all levels to help you learn more about programming, entrepreneurship, prototyping and much more.

Is there any admission fee?

Thanks to our generous sponsors and partners, admission will be free! This includes food, drinks, mentors, workshops, swag, and an unforgettable experience!

What's START Hack x Helsinki?

We've decided to host our hackathon in two locations simultaneously this year. Hackers will be able to attend either in the original location of St. Gallen, Switzerland or in Helsinki, Finland, organized by START Helsinki. This is a step towards making START Hack as accessible as possible to participants around Europe. Find out more on our START Hack x Helsinki page.

How can I apply?

In order to apply, just head over to our application page and fill out some basic info about you or your team! Just follow the instructions and you'll be on your way to START Hack '22 in no time!

Apply Now!

When will applications close?

Applications open from November 26, 2021, and will be evaluated on a rolling basis until the beginning of March. Space is limited and fills up quickly, so apply early!

How and when will I hear back?

Decisions will be released periodically, so you can expect to hear back from us a few days after you submit your application as either a team or as an individual. Please note that you have to confirm your acceptance!

Who can attend?

If you are a university, high-school student, or young professional, you're good to go! We will be accepting students and professionals of all academic backgrounds and previous knowledge of coding or business are not needed.
Not sure if you are eligible? Ask us!

How can we apply as a team?

Just follow the instructions on the application page for teams. In case you've got any questions, feel free to contact us!

How big are the teams?

Teams are 2-4 people in size. Teams bigger than 4 people are split up into smaller ones, as we've found large teams aren't the best solution for a 36h event.

What if I don't have a team?

Not to worry, most of our participants don't! That's why we've come up with many ways to help you meet other participants before and during START Hack '22. Just register as an individual hacker and we'll help you pair up with other hackers before the event!

What are the prizes?

Every partner will offer a prize for their respective case. These will not be announced beforehand, since your motivation is definitely not the prize but the amazing experience itself ;) There will be an overall prize pool for the best teams.

Is there a code of conduct?

Yes, you can find it here.

TLDR: Be nice and have fun.
